James "Hollywood" Browning - Profile
When James Browning left school, he didn’t fancy a 9 to 5 job, and he knew college wasn’t for him – so he joined the circus instead! Life’s had a maverick twist ever since – including stints as a comic impressionist (even appearing at the London Palladium) and then as a professional backgammon player – being crowned European Champion back in 1984 in St Tropez.
James then made a smooth transition from backgammon to blackjack – but he was a little too smooth for many of the big casinos, and they were soon on the lookout for James – he was just too good and they wouldn’t let him play!
Like many card players before him, James finally discovered poker, and has become a major player on the UK circuit, achieving top finishes in European ranking tournaments. His lively wit and extensive gaming experience made him a valued member on both Poker Night Live and Sky Poker.
2008, was the first year he particularly concentrated on tournaments and ended the year as No 1 in Europe in Pro Rank Level 2 ($1,000 buy-in or less), and No 6 in the world! In March 2009, William Hill offered James the chance to join Julian “Yo Yo” Thew as a sponsored player, and he looks forward to the coming months when he hopes to continue and build on his success. As James says, “I am looking forward to working with Julian, and if I can achieve a quarter of what he has, I will be a happy man!”
